Biography




Zahara grew up in a poor family and learned to play guitar by herself. She started her career by busking on the streets of East London and was discovered by TK Nciza, who signed her to his label TS Records. She was influenced by artists like Tracy Chapman and India Arie, and sings in her native language Xhosa as well as in English.


Career




Zahara released her debut album Loliwe in 2011, which sold out within 72 hours and reached double platinum status in South Africa. The album featured hit singles like "Loliwe", "Ndiza", and "Umthwalo". She followed it up with Phendula in 2013, which produced three chart-topping singles "Phendula", "Impilo", and "Stay".


In 2015, she released her third album Country Girl, which was certified triple platinum and featured collaborations with artists like Vusi Nova, Kirk Whalum, and Mzwakhe Mbuli. In 2017, she left TS Records and signed with Warner Music. She released her fourth album Mgodi, which was her best-selling album and was certified platinum. The album included songs like "Mgodi", "Usezondibona", and "Thembalam".


In 2021, she released her fifth album Nqaba Yam, which peaked at number one on iTunes. The album featured songs like "Nqaba Yam", "Nyamezela", and "Sinda Mphefumlo". She also appeared as a guest judge on the seventeenth season of Idols South Africa.

Zahara has won many awards and nominations for her music, including 17 South African Music Awards, three Metro FM Awards, one Nigeria Entertainment Award, one Kora Award, and one Channel O Music Video Award. She was also on the 2020 list of the BBC's 100 Women.

Loliwe ( Loliwe (2011)
